Childish Gambino’s “Heartbeat”
The song “Heartbeat,” sung by rapper Childish Gambino (CG), is one that both partners had an interest in remaking when considering what music video to recreate for the next upcoming project. Although there was already a music video for this song created by the original artist on Youtube, we both had a different vision for a video that could work with the song, and that is why we chose to remake this specific song. Both partners really enjoyed working on this project and spent many hours into creating a quality video. “Heartbeat” was created using quality equipment, a conceptual storyline, and many hours in the lab editing. We hope to access an audience with our video and impress those who watch it.
Creating a storyboard and concept, networking to find willing actors, filming, and post production editing took a lot of time and effort from the both of us. We have spent nearly 30 hours working and perfecting this music video. Much time was spent rendering and meticulously cutting footage.
In order to produce quality work we were able to use a high quality camera and equipt lighting. The equipment used to create our music video included two Canon 5D Mark II camera bodies and lenses and an AlienBees Flash Unit. Having two cameras allowed us to get a variance in camera angles so that we had more footage to choose from. For the post production editing, we used a program using Mac called Final Cut Pro. It was through this program that we were able to add effects to our footage and create a certain style to the video.
The filming occurred at a variety of different location settings and was segmented into different filming periods. We chose to evenly distribute our time so that we did not feel overwhelmed filming. For one of our main scenarios, we filmed our main actor, Joseph Spivey in the studio against a white background and added a cross-processing effect via final cut pro to produce a hipster like vibe to the music video and to capture the true mannerisms of Donald Glover otherwise known as CG.
For the following scenes where our actors are getting ready to go to the “party” we filmed them in both of our houses (CG was filmed at Jill’s apartment and Alexis was filmed at Rachel’s house). This video’s editing style begins as slow and melodic and then become fast and choppy for the majority of the video.
Our most detailed filmed scenario was the “party” scene, which was filmed in Rachel’s house. We invited many of our friends over and had them act out a mock “party” for that scene. We also set up the house like a party which included beer pong and solo cups, and a messy kitchen.
The main part of our creation of “Heartbeat” is when CG is caught in two fantasies as he enters the party. One being that he is so desperate to get with this girl he likes, Alexis but finds out that the boyfriend is at the party with her so he became outraged because he came to the party with expectations. The second scenario takes an opposite turn. Luckily, Alexis’s boyfriend has gone astray and left his girlfriend all alone in the corner. CG then grabs her and sneaks her out of the house, makes out with her and then the music video is over. Poof. Gambino shows up one more time confronting the camera which one she will chose, “Ayo, fuck this
are we dating? Are we fucking? Are we best friends? Are we something in between that?
I wish we never fucked, and I mean that”. Viewers are now faced to choose which fantasy actually happened, none of which are ever really told to you.
Overall, we both had a great time while making this video. We were very fortunate enough to have worked with some great actors and that our friends were willing to help with the video as well. We could not have executed this music video without a plan, the proper equipment and software, and the support from our actors and friends. After all the hard work that we put into creating “Heartbeat” we are both very pleased with the results.
